I have been photographing some of the House spiders living with us recently, they don’t often turn up in the bath so this one was helped into position and then released int the outside shed.
They probably do not feed much during the winter, and don’t need to being able to go fro months without feeding. And are not that active, they show when we disturb their hiding places where they are waiting for warmer weather. Of the several species ours are probably the one known as Tegenaria gigantea, although the species seems to have several names. Both sexes have impressive fangs, the males also have much enlarged palps.
We often see them most in the Autumn when the males are seeking females, and both sexes are looking to feed up to see them through the lean times of Winter. Crane flies attracted to the house lights are a favourite food.
